BREAKING: Scheffler back in custody after errant tee shot extends boundary of ankle monitor
PGA Tour star Scottie Scheffler will end his day where it began: In the custody of the Louisville Metro Police.
Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, was arrested at 8:40 this morning while driving into Valhalla Golf Club after initially disregarding an officer’s instructions to stop his vehicle. Traffic had been redirected due to a fatal car accident just outside the golf course. Scheffler said he was unaware of the accident and that the traffic pattern had been changed.
The golfer was taken into custody, where a mug shot followed. He was released and allowed to play the second round of the PGA Championship today but was required to wear an ankle monitor.
Scheffler opened his round on the back nine and birdied two of his first three holes. But his tee shot on the Par-4 13th hole went way left, near an out-of-bounds marker. The shot was so far offline, in fact, that it extended past the permitted boundary of the ankle monitor, at which point the Louisville Police descended on the scene and tackled Scheffler face-first into the thick, wet rough.
“Really pushing your luck today, huh pal?” one officer said while placing Scheffler in handcuffs for the second time this morning. “Don’t worry, where you’re going, they’ll be more than happy to help you find your balls.”
Many golf analysts believe being behind bars may significantly hinder Scheffler’s ability to win his second major tournament of the year.
This fact was not lost on Xander Schauffele, one of Scheffler’s premier rivals. “Book ‘em, boys!” he was heard saying while clicking his heels and smiling ear to ear.
Because Scheffler was holding a 7-iron when officers approached, he could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
This is a developing story.
