Dramamine launches anti-nausea remedy for stock market trackers
Makers of the popular motion-sickness medicine, Dramamine, today announced the release of a new product aimed at Americans who closely follow the stock market. This news comes amid a rise in reported symptoms of stress, nausea and dizziness among active investors.
While previous iterations of the drug were primarily dedicated to combating illness caused by travel, the new formula targets those who get queasy while watching skinny lines on the television rise and fall in violent bursts.
“For years, our products have helped people cope with seasickness and motion-related nausea,” said Mallory Spinnett, Senior Brand Director at Prestige Consumer Healthcare, Inc., which produces Dramamine. “But more recently, we noticed a different kind of turbulence—economic turbulence. Investors are experiencing daily market swings of 500 to 1,000 points, and the symptoms aren’t just emotional anymore.”
According to preliminary research conducted by the company, nearly 30% of self-identified “active investors” reported physical symptoms—ranging from headaches and stomach upset to mild vertigo—after closely tracking the markets for extended periods.
“I turned on CNBC this morning and couldn’t take my eyes off the screen,” said Lara Cameron of Hamden, Connecticut. “Watching those little lines shoot up, then plunge, then go back up again – I couldn’t make sense of it, but it was very unsettling. Within just a few minutes, I had a severe headache and felt that little lump forming in my throat. You know what I’m talking about, the worst feeling in the world. Pretty soon, the kids were cleaning up my mess. That was a first.”
Physicians and economists alike are advising Americans not to stare at market trends for more than a few seconds at a time – and even that, they say, should be done only once or twice a day. “Constantly monitoring the bumpy gyrations of a turbulent stock market isn’t good for anybody,” said Elisa Walter, a neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic. “Go outside and get some air.”
But for those who can’t stay away, there is now Dramamine: Stock Market Sickness Relief, available in both pill and chewable, sold over the counter in most pharmacies beginning next week.
